Have you been feeling stuck in a rut lately? We’ve all been there where we feel a bit stagnant, need some new inspiration, and want nothing more than to get things back on track. Getting out of a rut can feel like such a heavy lift that it can keep you trapped. To find that spark that makes you tick, and get back your happiness, try out these four healthy ways to get unstuck.

  1. Set Goals

When in a rut, your mindset can make you feel like things aren't going anywhere. A great way to get your mindset in a better place is through goal setting. Sit down and establish some clear-cut goals that you can work on. These can be things like starting an exercise routine, eating healthier, getting out of the house more, or working on something in your relationships. Whatever it may be, having firm goals established can help you strive towards something and make things future-focused. Once you have identified your goals, make a plan to reach them. Write down what you will do each day so that you can check them off and hold yourself accountable. You may find it even easier to reach your goals by trying a habit-tracking app to make it easy to see what may be hindering or helping you accomplish your goals.

2. Don’t Be Too Guarded

One thing that is sure to keep you stuck in a rut, is being guarded. Being constantly on edge, and being fearful of the unknown can keep you stuck. Therefore, try not to be too guarded. Put your suspicions aside, try new experiences, and let positive people into your life. Also, don’t be afraid to talk to someone who can help you. Speak up about your situation or what is bothering you that you may need some support with. For instance, If you find you have been feeling hopeless and gloomy for a long time, it's important to seek help. Meeting with a trusted mental health professional can help you find some online depression treatments to help you open up and move forward. Don’t hesitate to reach out.

3. Don’t Sit Around

Usually, when we feel stuck, we can just sit around, keeping us even more trapped. Do your best to not fall into this habit and get moving. Try doing some aerobics, purchase an exercise bike that can help you get away from a sedentary lifestyle, or invest in yourself and get moving by doing something like pilates. Engaging in pilates is a great activity because it bridges both mind and body for overall wellness. Plus, it can be customized to what you need. For instance, if jumping into a group class is too overwhelming at first, private training with an instructor can help guide you until you feel more comfortable. Either way learning something new and connecting with someone may be just what you need.

4. Get a Change of Scenery

Are you tired of seeing the same old things day in and day out? Perhaps your environment is contributing to your rut. A wonderful way to move forward is to get a change of scenery. When moving toward fall, you may be finding yourself missing the fun of summer. Why not get away and unwind, relax, and see something different? Take a vacation, and explore the great outdoors. If your job or schedule prevents you from going far, you don’t need to take an extended vacation. Take one day off to have a long weekend to take a break. Take a look at what may be a great day trip for you to see something new or try some great fun things to do outside on your days off.

Feeling stuck in a rut is no fun and can leave you feeling really unmotivated. However, be sure to change things up. Take steps to change your environment, get active, and lift your spirits. In the process, you are sure to discover better strategies to cope, and even adopt healthy choices that can keep you from feeling down in the first place. Sooner than later, you will be on to a better chapter and feeling empowered.
